Beloved Church, Today, the General Conference of The United Methodist Church approved an amended version of “The Traditional Plan” to define the official stance on the issue of ordination of and marriage of LGTBQ persons. While our Social Principles uphold the sacred worth of all people and expresses inclusion and love for all people, “The Traditional Plan” excludes practicing LGTBQ persons from ordination and marriage and will impose harsh retribution against any church or clergyperson who defies these laws. I can offer no better words of reflection on this decision than those offered by Dr. Tim Roberts, pastor of First UMC North Wilkesboro: “Regardless of which side each member of the UMC identifies, this decision is not one to be celebrated because it has inflicted a deep and likely irreparable division in our denomination. While the adoption of any plan would have had somewhat similar outcomes, the division is rooted not in the issue but rather that we, people who profess an abiding faith in Jesus and call each other brother and sister in Christ, have forgotten how to love and respect each other. Witnessing by live stream, one could sense that there was no seeking to listen and understand one another, but simply making sure that "my side wins." Ironic that we say that we are in the world but not of the world, since we have adopted the position that we must win at all cost. That's the world's way, not the Church's way, at least that's the way the Church should be.” As with most life-defining events, it will take some time before we can clearly understand the fullest implications of todays actions as it pertains to The United Methodist Church. We do not, however, need to wait to understand its immediate implications for Wilkesboro United Methodist Church. Today’s decision changes nothing about who we are – which is a church that exists “To share the Good News of Jesus, comfort the troubled, and embrace God’s love.” Wilkesboro UMC remains a place of belonging for all who enter our doors. We continue to value the sacred worth of all people to come and feast at Christ’s communion table. While we may hold many different views on today’s vote, it does not erase the ties that bind us together in Christian love. Our family remains united in our faithfulness to God and in our service to God’s people. So, beloved brothers and sisters in faith, I close with these words from a hymn that has been resonating with me all weekend, “Lord, for today’s encounters with all who are in need, who hunger for acceptance, for righteousness and bread, we need new eyes for seeing, new hands for holding on; renew us with your Spirit; Lord, free us, make us one!”* *Help Us Accept Each Other; United Methodist Hymnal; Words by Fred Kaan; 1975; Hope Publishing Co.
We celebrate with Dr Jim Brooks, our Director of music, on his induction into the Wilkes County Hall of Fame. We are grateful for his outstanding contributions to education as well as service to our community.
My friends General Conference of The United Methodist Church has voted to approve the Traditional Plan with amendments. You will see much in the news about this tonight but please be aware there are still many complicating issues to be sorted out. I will strive to process this information and offer my reflections later. For now please know that nothing changes about the love and inclusion we already have for all people. Wilkesboro UMC continues to be a safe place of belonging. I encourage your continued prayers and ask that you extend patience as we sort out all this means for our church and our denomination.
I know that many of you have followed General Conference sessions today but I wanted to give a brief update as it comes to a close. No decision has yet been reached. Today was a day set aside to determine what will get voted on tomorrow (Tuesday). As you know, we reviewed the 3 plans previously at church - these were brought before committee today: The Connectional plan was voted down without discussion; The One-Church Plan (supported by the Council of Bishops) was voted down as well. Only the Traditional Plan was approved (by 102 votes) to pass on to the Plenary session tomorrow. Please continue to pray for us to find a way forward that seeks unity and love in following Jesus. In the meantime, remember that Wilkesboro UMC remains a place of love and belonging and that is not up for vote.
Please be in prayer for the Bishops and Delegates of The United Methodist Church as they begin General Conference today. You may view the life stream of the conference at this link below http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/general-conference-2019-live-video-stream-english
